Background:
The Société de Transport de la Population (STP), the public transport operator in Mauritania’s capital city, Nouakchott, is undertaking a strategic initiative to elevate the standard and scope of its urban bus services. The overarching aim is to provide the city’s residents with a public transportation system that is affordable, dependable, and safe.
Objective:
STP’s initiative is anchored in the following key objectives:
Solution:
STP selected Trapeze Africa to implement the Trapeze LIO Intelligent Transport System (ITS) in 2024. The deployment included the installation of the non-proprietary PC7108 on-board units in STP’s new bus fleet of 162 vehicles. These modern buses are fitted with amplifiers and speakers to support real time communication to both the driver and passengers thus enhancing driver and commuter safety. The ITxPT-compliant on-board integration, built on the leading open standard for public transport technology, enables seamless connectivity with pre-fitted passenger counters and information displays.
Offices in the former city-centre airport have been repurposed, refurbished and transformed into a state-of-the-art control centre and bus depot. This centralised control centre supports the supply of real-time communications and announcements to the buses and monitoring service teams. The new ITS system delivers accurate, real-time information and features an advanced analytical dashboard that equips STP’s senior management team with powerful tools to effectively monitor and manage key performance indicators.
Results:
With Trapeze System, STP are now able, to provide more safe, reliable and on time public transport services to its commuters. This improved passenger experience throughout the network supports the move from informal transport and is resulting in a reduction in traffic congestion.
Building on this initial success, STP has taken the initiative to expand the network and is currently deploying additional routes, with plans to launch three BRT lines covering a total of 36 km by the end of September 2025.
STP, supported by Trapeze’s ITS solution, is well on its way to achieving its goal of transporting 150,000 commuters daily in 2026.
